First Prize: The first prize goes to Kunal!

kedarkantha trek

Goes for the feel the photographer has managed to create through this composition. A sense of achievement and happiness, being at the top is very evident in this picture! Photographer is successful in stirring a craving in us, to be at that very place to enjoy that very view.  The dark red shirt of the foreground subject against the white background of the mountains worked very well for the contrast and separation. The placement of subject on the vertical thirds adds strength and stability to the composition. The curves of the mountains naturally guides the viewer's eyes into the frame to explore the depth of the scene slowly. In all a beautiful, involving composition."

Second Prize: The second prize goes to Nupur!
kedarkantha trek
A beautiful early morning scene painted by light. Credits to the photographer for capturing the glorious golden yellow rays, lighting only a selective section in the frame. Exposure is perfectly handled. Details in the shadow region is also visible. Depth is beautifully handled using layers - that small bit of snow in the foreground, the dried tree in the shadow region, the lighted section of the mountains and the snowcapped mountains in the background. Even the top-thirds occupied by the sky is dramatic with clouds reflecting the light!

Third Prize: The third prize goes to Gagan!
kedarkantha contest
Another beautiful composition. Fell short of being incredible because of tilted horizon which makes the mountains look as if they are sliding backwards towards the right and the top one third sky not offering much to the composition. Apart from that, truly a million dollar place to sit and enjoy the incredible view of the mountains below. Photographer has managed to capture the true essence of the environment through this picture.

Chadar 2013

Chadar Jan/Feb - 2013 Photo Contest

The contest results are out !  The top three winning photos are below. Our Judge Srinivasa Prasath shares with you why the pictures turned up winners. Post your comments below.

First Prize: Arun

chadar trek

Sometimes we need to wear monochrome goggles to experience the true beauty offered by the scene, stripping off all usuals including colors. It takes a lot of imagination and observation to shoot a frame in monochrome. First prize rightly goes to Arun for coming up with a Chadar scene in monochrome. It helps the viewer enjoy the selective play of light during that time of day, relate to the mood of the trekkers relaxing next to their camps in such a beautiful place and finally the simplicity of living in the tents with bare minimum requirements! Exposure is handled very nicely with good details even in the shadow region. Depth is good with sharp details from foreground to background. A fantastic capture, truly deserving!

Second Prize : Dave

chadar trek

Well done Dave for choosing this amazing perspective to capture this frame. It has all the interesting elements that make up Chadar trek! Trekkers climbing up that incredible slope is a great choice of the foreground subject and by positioning them in the bottom thirds intersection you have anchored it very nicely. The frozen zanskar river, the deep gorges and the sheet of chadar are very clearly visible from this POV. Good exposure combined with lighting ensured the sky color and details on the mountains. In all the frame makes the viewer want to be there and enjoy the beauty of the scene. A nice capture!

Third Prize Sourav
chadar trek

Saurav has managed to capture a scene that is very unique to Chadar trek - Walking on the sheet of ice! Overall exposure is good except for the sky. Having sky without color is lacking a bit of interest on the top thirds. But the color of the sheet of ice in the bottom two thirds make up for that completely. Depth is very good with good details on the white ice flakes in the foreground to the distant mountains in the background. The line-up of people is also interesting, slowly leading the attention into the frame. Overall a good capture!

Roopkund - Sept/Oct 2012 Photo Contest

The contest results are out !  The top three winning photos are below. Our Judge Srinivasa Prasath shares with you why the pictures turned up winners. Post your comments below.

First Prize: The first prize goes to Shakthi!

Roopkund photo contest

A beautiful campsite scene taken at the golden hour. The quality of the light is so pure and soft, gently lighting the entire scene. Edges of the slopes take a zig zag path slowly leading the viewer's attention to the mountain in the background. Good depth and appropriate exposure to show the details on the mountain as well. Only wish the tent was not cornered so much towards the right.

Second Prize: The second prize goes to Saikat!

Roopkund photo contest

Beautiful framing by the photographer. The bell on the left is placed on the thirds to directly grab the viewer's attention. The wooden block on the left, the flowing yellow cloth nicely frame the mountain below and restrict the attention inside. Shallow depth and side lighting works well here. Beautiful perspective.

Third Prize: The third prize goes to Baasir!

Roopkund trek

More often than not, panoramic format is ignored by the photographers. Here the photographer has rightly chosen to present the beauty of the landscape using the wide panoramic format. Nice point of view to capture the reflection completely. Also the concrete edge of the lake nicely guide the eyes from left to right making sure nothing is missed. A colorful capture!

First Prize: The first prize goes to Swathi!

valley of flowers photo contest

This photograph shows the keen eye of the photographer. The way the flower and the bee is isolated from the background using a shallow DoF allows the viewer to concentrate totally on the foreground. Also the bee is kept perfectly on the thirds to direct the attention directly on the main subject. Yellow and green makes a soothing color combination.

Second Prize: The second prize goes to Jinu John!

Valley of flowers photo contest

Beautiful cloud hugging Landscape, so typical of VOF! Exposure balance is brilliant. Magenta in the foreground (of the flowers) leads the eyes slowly into the frame and helps explore the background completely. Good depth of field to capture the details on the mountains as well. Blue sky is definitely a bonus!

Third Prize: The third prize goes to Sibharini!
